Russell T Davies was awarded the 2006 Dennis Potter Award at BAFTA for his writing services to television. He created Torchwood for the BBC (Best New Drama Series TV Quick Awards) the second series of which is currently being transmitted on BBC 2 and 3, and he also created The Sarah Jane Adventures for CBBC. He is currently working on the fourth 13-part series of Dr Who for the BBC (winner Best Drama Series BAFTA, winner Pioneer Audience Award BAFTA, winner Most Popular Drama National Television Awards, nominated Best Series Broadcast Awards, nominated Best Series RTS Awards, nominated Best Series Press Guild Awards, Series 2 Best Drama National Television Awards).

Russell was born in Swansea in 1963. A graduate of Oxford University, he completed the BBC Director's course before becoming a TV producer. While working in the Manchester department of Children's BBC, Russell wrote his first full-length script in the form of a pilot for 1991 youth science fiction TV series Dark Season.

After moving to Granada, he served as a producer as well as writer on hospital drama Children's Ward, winning a BAFTA for Best Children's Drama in 1996. He also wrote his second well-received science fiction production, Century Falls.

He subsequently worked on The House of Windsor, Springhill, The Grand, and mini-series Touching Evil before winning recognition and acclaim for his controversial award winning gay drama Queer as Folk (Red Productions/C4) (Best Drama at the Indie Awards/nominated for RTS Best Serial and Broadcast Awards/won the Judges' Award at the North West RTS, plus Gaytime TV Best Drama). For his romantic comedy-drama Bob & Rose starring Alan Davies and Lesley Sharp, he received the Writer of the Year Award at the Comedy Awards (also Best Comedy Drama, Best International Drama at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, Best Drama at the Indie Awards, nominated for South Bank Show Awards, Broadcast Awards, RTS Awards, TRIC Awards, BAFTA Best Serial Award)). The Second Coming (Red Productions/ITV) starring Christopher Eccleston and Lesley Sharp and directed by Adrian Shergold won the Best One-off Drama at the Broadcast Awards ( also nominated RTS Awards 2004 for Best Writer, nominated BAFTA Best Drama Serial). He also wrote Casanova (Red Productions/BBC/LWT) starring David Tennant (nominated Press Guild Awards), and a 5-part series for Red Productions/ITV called Mine All Mine.

In addition to penning a book based on Dark Season, Russell also wrote the Doctor Who novel Damaged Goods.
