Adrian Bate
Executive Producer, DCD Media/Box TV
One of the more experienced of producers working in television, Adrian started his career in the cutting rooms but after four years trapped inside smoked filled rooms he decided to try and get some fresh air on the other side of the camera as an assistant director. Jack Gold took a huge risk and brought Adrian in to work with him on the then fledgling Film Four Production Preying Mantis. After a spell in documentaries for Channel 4, Adrian found himself co-producing the then highest ever budgeted Independent WW2 six-part drama Piece of Cake for ITV. This led to more series being produced - for Channel 4 two seasons of Diary of a Teenage Health Freak and Demob for Talkback/ITV.
Realising that independent drama was the place to be, Adrian formed his own production company - Turning Point Productions. In 1989 the company produced the Gerald Seymour thriller Red Fox starring John Hurt, Jane Birkin, and Brian Cox. Red Fox went on to win awards at the Chicago and Monte Carlo Festivals.
The BBC had thus far escaped Adrian's attentions, so when offered he took up the challenge of producing and launching the first series of the BBC1 popular drama Dangerfield and this in turn led to an executive producer's role for the BBC's London Drama Department to oversee shows such as Casualty, Beck starring Amanda Redman, and Brokers Man starring Kevin Whately.
In 1997 a return to his independent company Turning Point saw Adrian producing the award winning John Mortimer adaptation of Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie for ITV.
The offer to be the Head of Film & Drama at Zenith Entertainment in 1999 proved tempting and over the next six years Adrian produced and executive produced over 40 hours of prime time UK drama. These included three seasons of Two Thousand Acres of Sky and two seasons of 55 Degrees North for BBC1. Other productions included the controversial Hear The Silence (Five) starring Juliet Stevenson and Hugh Bonneville, Best of Both Worlds (BBC1), Roman Road (ITV) starring Alan Davies, and Class of ‘76 starring Robert Carlyle.
Adrian's first production for Box is Andrew Davies' adaptation of Sarah Waters' novel Affinity - a complex and intriguing supernatural mystery and a poignant love story with an unexpected twist in the tale. It will air on ITV1 later this year. Adrian also executive produced The Last Enemy, Box's recent serial for BBC1.
